The Real Reason to Book a Family Photoshoot | A Relaxed Family Photo session in a Cotswold Poppy Field
Family Photoshoot in the Cotswolds: What If My Children Don't Cooperate?
This is probably one of the most common questions parents ask before booking a family photoshoot.
And the answer is simple: they don't have to!
Children are not meant to stand still, smile on command, and behave perfectly for an hour. They're meant to explore, laugh, run, cuddle, ask questions, and sometimes even have a little wobble. That's what makes them children.
As a family photographer in Cheltenham and the Cotswolds, my sessions are designed around your family, not around perfect behaviour. There is no pressure and no expectation for anyone to perform.
Instead, we play! Simply because the best photographs often happen when everyone forgets about the camera and just enjoys being together.
A Family Photoshoot Is About More Than Just Photographs
Of course, beautiful photographs are one of the reasons families book a session with me or any other family photographer. But what often surprises parents is how much they actually enjoy the experience itself.
Life is busy. Between work, school runs, clubs, homework, cooking, and everything else that fills our days, it can be difficult to find time to simply be together without distractions.
A family photoshoot gives you the chance to slow down for an hour or so, to put your phones away, to chat, to laugh, to cuddle and to truly enjoy each other's company.
The Gift of Quality Time. Sometimes What Children Need the Most Is Simply You
After this beautiful family session in a breathtaking Cotswold poppy field, the older boy looked at his parents and said, "My heart is full now."
Those words stayed with me long after the session ended.
I don't think he was talking about the photographs. I think he was talking about the time he had just spent with his mum, dad and little brother, feeling seen, loved and completely present with the people who matter most.
And that, for me, is what family photography is really about.
The photographs are a wonderful reminder of that day, but the real magic happens in the moments you spend together. My hope is that years from now, when you look back at your images, they won't just remind you what your family looked like, but how it felt to be together in that moment.
Why I Always Take Photos of Mum and Dad Together
There is something else that is incredibly important to me during every family photoshoot. I always make time to photograph the parents.
Not because they ask for them, but because they usually don't ;)
Somewhere along the way, many parents stop appearing in photographs together. Life becomes about the children, and while that's beautiful, it's also important to remember where the family began.
You are the roots of this family tree. It was your love that created it, and it is your love that gives it strength, stability and a place for everyone to belong.
Children love seeing affection between their parents. They love seeing Mum and Dad hold hands, share a cuddle, laugh together, and simply enjoy each other's company. These photographs become part of your family story too.
Years from now, your children won't just want to remember what they looked like. They will want to remember how much their parents loved each other.
The Importance of Sibling Photographs
Some of my favourite images from every family session are sibling photographs. These relationships grow and change so quickly.
What feels ordinary today will become precious tomorrow. Photographs allow you to preserve those connections exactly as they are right now.
The Perfect Balance of Natural Moments and Timeless Portraits
Many families tell me they want natural photographs. And they absolutely get them.
Some of the most treasured images from a session are the candid moments:
But I also understand the importance of having a beautiful family portrait. The kind of photograph that deserves a place on your wall. The kind of image that turns your house into a home.
Because photographs aren't just decoration.
Research has shown that children who see photographs of themselves displayed around the home often develop a stronger sense of belonging and self-worth. Seeing family photographs reminds them that they are loved, valued, and an important part of something bigger than themselves.
Your walls tell your family's story and that's a story worth displaying.
