Outdoor Maternity Photography at Sunset: Everything You Need to Know Before Your Summer Photoshoot in and around Cheltenham and the Cotswolds
There is something incredibly beautiful about photographing pregnancy outdoors in the summer.
The warm evening light, the rolling Cotswold countryside, long grasses moving gently in the breeze and the sun slowly disappearing behind the hills can create maternity photographs that feel romantic, timeless and completely connected to this special chapter of your life.
But if you have never had a maternity photoshoot before, you may also have lots of questions.
Do I need to be fit enough to walk up a hill? Will I be too hot? What should I wear? What if I don't know how to pose? What if I don't feel particularly confident in my pregnant body?
These are all completely understandable questions.
As a Cheltenham maternity photographer, I want your outdoor maternity photoshoot to feel relaxed, comfortable and enjoyable. You don't need to know how to pose, you don't need to be particularly fit and you certainly don't need to look or feel like a model.
You simply need to arrive with your beautiful bump and I'll take care of the rest.
Can you photograph me beautifully if I don't feel confident during pregnancy?
Pregnancy can be a wonderful experience, but that doesn't necessarily mean you feel confident in your changing body every day.
Your body is growing, your shape is changing and you may feel very different from how you normally feel. Perhaps you don't like having your photograph taken, or you're worried that you'll look bigger than you expected. Maybe you're wondering whether you'll recognise yourself in the photographs.
Please know that you don't need to feel confident before your maternity photoshoot.
That is my job.
During your session, I'll guide you through gentle poses and movements that flatter your changing shape and beautifully show your bump. I'll consider the light, your position, your hands, your posture, your dress and the way the fabric moves around you.
I don't expect you to know what to do.
I'll give you simple directions throughout the session so that you never feel like you're standing there wondering where to put your hands or how you're supposed to pose.
And if there is something you're particularly conscious about, please tell me. I want you to feel comfortable and beautiful, not exposed or self-conscious.
For me, maternity photography isn't about creating photographs of a perfect body.
It's about celebrating your body exactly as it is while you are growing your baby.
These photographs become a beautiful reminder of the woman you were at this moment in your life — before you met the little person who was about to change everything.
Do I need to be very fit to have an outdoor maternity photoshoot?
Absolutely not.
You don't need to be fit, athletic or used to walking long distances.
Outdoor maternity photography doesn't have to mean hiking for miles across the countryside. When I plan an outdoor session, I take your stage of pregnancy and your comfort into consideration.
If you're heavily pregnant, the last thing I want is for you to feel exhausted before we've even started taking photographs.
The aim is to find a beautiful location where we can create a variety of photographs without making the session physically demanding.
Your comfort always comes first.
Is it safe to have a maternity photoshoot on a hill?
Yes, provided we choose a suitable location and take sensible precautions.
A hill doesn't mean climbing steep slopes or walking over difficult terrain.
When choosing an outdoor location, I consider accessibility, the ground underfoot, weather conditions and how comfortable the location will be for you.
You'll never be expected to do anything that feels unsafe or uncomfortable.
We'll take our time, avoid unsuitable areas and stop whenever you need to.
The goal isn't to reach the top of a mountain!
It's to find a beautiful piece of the Cotswold landscape where we can create photographs that make you feel incredible.
Why is golden hour so beautiful for maternity photography?
There is a reason photographers love golden hour.
The hour around sunset produces soft, warm and flattering light that can make photographs feel almost magical.
Rather than the harsh overhead light you can experience in the middle of a summer day, the sun sits much lower in the sky. This creates beautiful warmth, softer shadows and a gorgeous glow around your hair and body.
For maternity photography, this light can be particularly beautiful.
It can gently illuminate your bump, create a beautiful silhouette and add warmth to your skin while the countryside behind you becomes part of the story.
And when the sun is lower on the horizon, I can use the light creatively to create both softly lit portraits and more dramatic backlit images.
The result is a gallery that feels romantic, artistic and timeless.
What should I wear for an outdoor maternity shoot in summer?
One of the questions I hear most often is “What am I going to wear?” and the good news is, you don't need to worry about finding the perfect maternity outfit yourself.
For my outdoor maternity sessions, I provide a beautiful selection of maternity dresses, gowns and fabrics that are carefully chosen to photograph beautifully and flatter your changing shape. From elegant, fitted gowns that beautifully show off your bump to flowing fabrics that catch the evening breeze, there are options to suit different styles and personalities.
So, if you don't have anything suitable in your wardrobe, don't worry, I've got you covered.

Of course, you're also very welcome to bring and wear your own clothes if you have something you love and feel beautiful in. Your outfit doesn't have to be a traditional maternity dress. A simple fitted dress, a beautiful skirt and top, or something meaningful to you can work wonderfully too.
The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident.
What colours photograph best at sunset?
Neutral, earthy and soft colours tend to work beautifully against the Cotswold countryside.
Cream, ivory, beige, soft blush, muted pinks, warm browns and gentle greens can all complement the natural surroundings.
For a more dramatic look, deeper tones can also work beautifully against the evening sky.
I generally recommend avoiding very bright neon colours or distracting patterns, as they can take attention away from you and your bump.
Think about the overall feeling you want from your photographs.
Soft neutrals create a timeless, elegant look, while richer colours can create something more dramatic and artistic.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
You don't need to bring lots of things.
I recommend keeping it simple:
Water
Your chosen outfits
Comfortable shoes for walking between locations
Something warm to put on between photographs if the evening becomes cooler
Any personal items you'd like included in your photographs
And don't worry about carrying lots of props.
The landscape, the beautiful evening light and your connection with your partner and the bump are more than enough.
