Christmas is such a magical time, especially when you have young children. They change so quickly from one year to the next, and there is something incredibly special about capturing their excitement, personalities and the little details that make this particular Christmas theirs.
My Christmas Mini Sessions in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire are designed to create beautiful, natural and timeless photographs that you can enjoy for years to come, whether you want to update your family photographs, create Christmas cards or give grandparents something super special.
And if you're wondering what a Christmas mini session is actually like, here are three questions I hear most often before families book.
How long is a Christmas Mini Session?
Christmas mini sessions can be as short as 15, 20 or 30 minutes, depending on the photographer you choose. My Christmas Mini Sessions are 45 minutes long - and there’s a reason for that.
I deliberately allow 45 minutes because I never want your family photoshoot to feel rushed or like another task you simply have to get through.
Children don’t always walk into a photography session ready to smile at the camera. They may need a little time to get comfortable, explore the Christmas setting and get used to having me around. And even if I’ve photographed your family before, young children don’t always remember me!
I want you to have time to get to know me, relax and feel completely at ease. I’ll spend some time playing with your children, chatting to them and letting them get to know me so that they can begin to feel comfortable in my company.
Once they start having fun, that’s when the magic happens.
Rather than asking your children to sit still and smile throughout the session (unless that’s what you want), I want them to play, laugh, interact with you and each other and simply be themselves. This gives me the opportunity to capture a beautiful variety of natural, genuine moments - the little smiles, giggles, excitement, cuddles and connections that make your family unique.
Forty-five minutes gives us enough time to let those moments happen naturally, without making the session feel like something we need to accomplish within a few minutes.
Most importantly, I want you to remember your Christmas photoshoot as a wonderful, fun and heartwarming experience, not something that felt stressful or rushed.
It’s also a lovely amount of time for younger children. We have enough time to settle them, capture those precious natural moments and take a variety of photographs, while keeping the session short enough that little ones are less likely to become tired, bored or overwhelmed.
And if your children aren’t particularly keen on having their photograph taken, please don’t worry!
I have lots of experience working with children and toddlers, and I never expect them to sit perfectly still and smile on command. In fact, some of my favourite family photographs are created when children forget about the camera altogether.
The giggles, excitement, cuddles, funny expressions and little interactions between siblings are often the moments that tell the most beautiful story.
What should we wear for our Christmas photoshoot?
This is probably one of the first things parents think about after booking.
The good news is that you don't need to dress everyone in matching Christmas jumpers unless you want to.
For timeless family photographs, I generally recommend choosing colours and textures that complement each other rather. Soft neutrals, creams, beige, warm browns, burgundy, forest green and other muted festive colours can work beautifully with a Christmas setting. You could also introduce a little sparkle or a festive accessory if that feels like you.
Think about the overall look you want from your photographs. If you love classic and elegant images, keep clothing simple and coordinated. If your family is more playful, don't be afraid to bring a little Christmas personality into your outfits.
Most importantly, choose clothes that you and your children feel comfortable wearing. If they are constantly pulling at an uncomfortable jumper or complaining about itchy fabric, it will be much harder for them to relax.
Can I bring my dog to the Christmas photoshoot?
Yes! Dogs are more than welcome. 🐾
As a dog owner, I know that for many families, your dog is just as much a part of the family as everyone else, so it makes perfect sense that you might want them included in your Christmas photographs.
If you'd like your dog to be part of the session, just let me know beforehand so we can plan the photographs accordingly.
We can take some photos with the whole family together and then give your dog a little break while we concentrate on the children.
What happens during the 45 minutes?
When you arrive, we'll take a little time to settle in, and I'll guide you throughout the session.
We'll create a mixture of:
photographs of your children together
individual portraits
photographs with Mum and Dad
family photographs
natural interactions and cuddles
fun Christmas moments
The exact photographs we create will depend on your family, your children's ages and their personalities.
And if your little one decides they don't want to cooperate for a few minutes?
That's okay.
We have 45 minutes.
We can pause, have a cuddle, or a snack, play a little game and try again. Often, once children stop thinking about the camera, that's when the magic happens.
