Newborn and siblings photoshoot - what to expect during your newborn session with an older sibling
Having a newborn baby is a very special and exciting time for the whole family, including the older siblings. The whole family life changes when the new baby arrives home from the hospital, and older children can definitely notice this change. Their routine is no longer the same, they might not get as much attention as before, or enough sleep getting woken up by their crying baby brother or sister. But, despite all those changes, the older siblings love this tiny human as much as parents and grandparents, and so it is very important to include them in the newborn photoshoot so that you can capture the beginning of their lifelong bond.
If you are planning a newborn photoshoot in Cheltenham or The Cotswolds, here is everything you need to know to prepare for a smooth newborn session with their older brothers and sisters.
The key to a Successful newborn and siblings photoshoot
When it comes to photographing newborns with their older brothers and sisters, it’s not a walk in a park, even though it might seem like it when you see the end result. Children, especially young children, will struggle to sit still or lie down and pose for a long time, making it harder for the photographer to take a perfect picture. It's just not in their nature! They have to trust the photographer first, be prepared for the shot, and entertained while the picture is taken. As a qualified primary school teacher and experienced nursery practitioner, I understand children’s needs and know how their brains work. For years, I studied children’s development, psychology, and pedagogy which gave me the knowledge and understanding of children’s behaviour. Having worked in childcare for many years, I have a lot of expertise in engaging with young children (basically I know the tricks to get them to do what I want them to do without bribing).
So, if you are thinking of booking a newborn photo session in Cheltenham, look no more. I would love to work my magic on your children and create lasting memories for you to cherish.
What to expect during the newborn session?
At Magda O Photography, a typical dreamy newborn and sibling photo session can last 3–4 hours. This way, we allow plenty of time for your baby to be fed, changed, and settled in between the posing. Having more time for a newborn with siblings session also allows the older children to get to know the photographer, and for the photographer to gain children’s trust and to figure out what approach to use when interacting with them.
I usually start with the family portraits. This helps children (especially the more reluctant ones) feel more relaxed because they are with their parents so they feel more confident in front of the camera. Then, I try to do photos of the newborn baby and siblings before the children loose interest or get too tired or hungry… And at the end, everyone can relax and I take care of the baby and take individual photos of just the newborn. What I noticed though, is that many children usually stay and watch me posing their baby brother or sister, which is very sweet and shows how much they care.
For newborn photo shoots in Cheltenham and The Cotswolds, I visit my clients homes. This way you don’t have to worry about packing anything or getting to the studio on time. All you need to do is to get ready (if you want to have your makeup and hair done), and I will arrive with all the equipment and set up a small photography studio in your house.
What should the siblings wear during the newborn shoot?
I always advice to choose one main and one (max two) additional, complementary colours of clothing for the shoot. When you prepare for a newborn photo session with a toddler or older children, try to keep the outfits simple. Too many ruffles can take away from the most important thing in the photos, which is your children’s faces and their expressions. Natural colours like beige, cream or pastels work best. You can buy outfits for your baby as well, or you may also use the outfits and wraps from my collection.
Tips to prepare toddlers and older children for a newborn photoshoot.
Newborn photoshoot is a totally new experience for little ones, and they have to be prepared for it just like for any other major occasion, such as a wedding, holiday or big birthday party. Please talk to your children about the photographer, saying their name and, if possible, showing their picture. If they are on social media, show your child a behind the scenes so they can imagine what it could be like when it’s time for their photoshoot. Always plan in advance, and keep reminding your little one about the shoot and show them your excitement! Children copy us and model what we do, so if you show them you’re not happy about it or feel worried, they may pick up on it and become more apprehensive.
Make this day super special. You can prepare some favourite snacks, or buy a new toy for your child to make them feel even more special, calm and safe. Write the date of your session in a calendar and do a little countdown with your child (a bit like you do a countdown till Christmas or their birthday), make them feel like it is going to be an exciting day, because it will be! And it will mostly be about them, not so much about the baby (because obviously baby won’t remember it, but they will). On the day of your session, my main focus will be on your older children and my job will be to get them happy and engaged. And when they are happy, we are all happy!!
Lastly, try not to expect too much, especially form toddlers. Some might not be interested in the newborn baby at all and they may not cooperate for long, but I will do my best and try everything in my power to take some cute photos of your child and baby together. I have almost unlimited patience and a natural way with children so I can promise you, I won’t give up easily.
Finally,
All children are different and unique, just like there are no two families which are exactly the same. Everyone needs different things to make them feel safe and open up to a “stranger” with a big black camera. Some children, especially older ones, might be able to sit and cuddle their newborn baby brother or sister in a very safe way. Others, might need a little bit more encouragement, but all photos represent your family and something unique about you and your children.
If you’re looking for a newborn photographer in Cheltenham who understands children and is able to capture the connection and love siblings feel to each other, I’d love to connect with you and discuss your vision.
I’m taking bookings for babies due in 2025 in Cheltenham, Gloucester, Cotswolds & surrounding areas.
Love,
